A comprehensive 2-day Introduction to Offshore Wind and its unique challenges & risks

Towards the end of 2012 4,620 MW of offshore wind has been installed globally, approximately 2% of the total global installed wind power schemes. 90% of this offshore wind is currently installed in Northern Europe, with the UK installing its 1000th offshore turbine. There is growing interest globally in offshore wind projects in the USA, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and even India. This course provides a two day introduction to the many aspects of offshore wind power and the current and potential markets and technological challenges presented within the industry.

Course highlights

• Overview of wind resource assessment; the tools and techniques including remote sensing and how this relates to bankability through P50 and P90 yields
• Comparing and contrasting offshore wind with onshore: including resources, installation challenges and economics
• Understanding the past and future evolution of offshore wind technologies
• Offshore grid networks, economics and constraints
• The importance of EIAs to the planning application, development constraints and mitigation
• Quantifying the cost variables and trends of offshore wind power, including levelised cost and its competitiveness with other sources
• Current case studies used throughout the course along with up to date development and market information

This time-effective 2-day course is aimed specifically at business and commercially-focused people, to explain in clear language (and from an independent perspective) the current and future technology and economic factors which will determine the growth trajectory of the offshore wind industry.

Level & Style

As with all Green Power Academy courses, the day will run in a highly interactive and informal manner, with plenty of time for questions and discussion. We cover many technology and some financial principles, but all are presented in a clear fashion such that no prior technical knowledge or expertise is assumed. The course is not designed for experienced offshore wind experts.

In addition to presented material, we will utilise a number of simple spreadsheet-based tools, data sources, videos and other materials in order to better drive home the various learning objectives and understand the key concepts. Attendees will be able to take all such materials with them from the course.
